Grief Touches Us All

Grief Support Circle at Universal Spirit Center

by Borghild Kellenberger, RScP

While sorrow and loss are universal experiences, few of us have had the opportunity to fully grieve. Whether we experience the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship through break up or divorce, the loss of a job, or any catastrophic event, we are confronted with grief. There is no manual on how to cope with loss and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. Grief is a very personal experience.

The purpose of the Grief Support Circle at Universal Spirit Center is to provide a safe welcoming space for anyone experiencing grief. During five weeks, we process feelings and emotions that arise from loss. There are no timelines, each one of us walks this path as we move from story to making peace with our loss and move toward healing.

Grief transforms us. When the worst happens we can’t help but change. What we know of life until then shifts and we realize that life as we know it will never be the same.

There is a collective grief we experienced as a nation, as a world, due to the devastating impact of COVID-19 with over one million deaths in the US alone. At the same time, we are also experiencing our own personal losses, many due to the pandemic, while others are losses we’ve never given ourselves time to process and properly grieve. It’s time to begin a conversation around loss and grief. I like to think that The Grief Support Circle is one baby step in that direction.

At a more personal level, it took me a long time to process the grief of my brother Michael’s death. He was nineteen. His death seemed so senseless, so unfair, so inexplicable. I was so young and all I knew to be was angry at him. So I stuffed my grief into my emotional body and stayed angry for a long time. What I came to realize years later, is that my anger was affecting me emotionally, physically and spiritually. So, with time, as I processed my grief for Michael, healing began to transform me.

Grief is love…love transforms us.

Grief Support Circle this quarter begins on Tuesday, July 5 at 6:30pm at 3927 Utah St. Suite A, San Diego, CA 92104, Monday nights for the remainder of the meetings.
